PARTS OF SPEECH
The Office of Garrett DeRossett
Email, Instagram
I’m a graphic designer and director based in Nashville, TN and Brooklyn, NY. In 2017, I founded Alright Studio, a creative company based in New York City. Past lives include design lead at charity: water, art direction at Platoon, and instructor at Parsons School of Design.
In my private practice, I work mainly with musicians, artists, and other creatives. I’m a creative-director-in-residence for JC Coventry, Lamplight, TWHP, and occasionally work alongside my friends at Planetary Services.
A million years ago I ran a studio Mono Mono with my friend Ian Williams, who co-founded the first incarnation of Alright with Hope DeRossett and myself. I was briefly an owner and creative director of an olive oil brand, helped launch a community radio network, and will design your album art if you aren’t careful.
My hope is that my work honors its own form and function, observing relationships between its purpose and context. I look for a feeling somewhere in the space between things (I have adopted the term “the click” for this) that evokes a sort of rightness. Not perfection, exactly, but a harmony that makes sense of tension. In that way, I guess I’d like to see the work that follows perhaps give someone else a reason to feel the same.
If there are general consistencies across my portfolio, they’re likely some form or fashion of precise, tactile, hyperbolic, interactive, typographic, overdesigned, unreasonable, particular, wordy, rigorous, opinionated, referential, human, squished, stretched, gridded, “default?”, dynamic, surprising, expandible, layered, modular, over-architected, “eh,” sticky, functional, but, generally, tend to be the more thoughtful expressions of an idea in the shape of a website, identity, poster, app, album cover, etc. I’d argue that the ideas are the part that stick around.
I’ve been fortunate to have spoken with The Brand Identity, Its Nice That, and Pathfinder, amongst others. Clients include A24, Brain Dead, Ghostly International, Northern Spy Records, Post Malone, Public Records, Talking Heads, & XL Recordings.
